Dogs Trounce Jackets -
Apr 14, 2008On a sunny Saturday afternoon the #15 ranked Georgia Bulldogs easily dismantled the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 19-10. The loss was Tech's sixth on the season (5-6) and ended their streak of 6 straight seasons with a winning record.
The rough season for the Jackets did get any easier as the high powered offense of the Bulldogs flexed their will on Georgia Tech. From the opening whistle it was all Georgia as they got off 5 shots before Tech got their first possesion. UGA would score first and lead 1-0 early in the contest. The Tech defense played well early on and created some offensive rushes for the Jackets but the solid defense of the Bulldogs thwarted any scoring chances. Georgia would score again to make it 2-0 before the Jackets got on the board when James Chen scored on an assist from Carl Wilson to make it 2-1 UGA. But Georgia would close the door on the Tech offense and keep the Jackets held to the one goal for the rest of the half.
On the other end of the field though Georgia was just getting started. The defense for Tech used a variety of defenses in an attempt to slow the high powered Georgia offense but it was to no avail as the Dogs found some openings to score at will it seemed. At the end of the one half of play it was all Georgia 12-1.
Facing one of their deepest holes in many years Tech opened the second half with some carefree play and made the game much more exciting. The defense seemed to play smarter but the defecit was too much to overcome. In the second half though the scoreboard was being lit by noth teams. Scoring for Tech in the third were Garrett Simmer, Joe Gibson and Chen. Simmer was making just his second appearence of the season after missing the first part with what was thought to be a season ending injury. It was a great moment to see Simmer score in his final game ever for Tech. In the third quarter Tech also got a goal from David Hern in his finalgame for Tech.
The fourth quarter provided more fireworks for the Jackets as Zack Gassman recorded two assists to Alex Del Pozzo and two seniors closed out their career's with a goal each: Simmer and Matt Crabtree. The final score was 19-10 in favor of Georgia but the Jackets showed some life in the second half and gave the crowd at Lassiter High School a fun game to watch.

Home Sweet Home -
Mar 31, 2008The Georgia Tech Lacrosse Team returned from Spring Break to face an upstart Southern Methodist University (SMU) squad and came away with a hard fought 9-7 victory, the Jackets second win in a row. The win was secondary as all thoughts of the game were with SMU's goalie David Perrin. In the second quarter of the game one of David's team mates rolled onto his leg causing a compound break that halted the game for the paramedics to arrive and attend to David. It was a tragic injury for David. He was immediately taken to the hospital where he underwent successful surgery that evening. David is from Atlanta so he is lucky to have his family here to assist him.
The offense was controlling the game early but not finishing the opportunities they had in front of them. But after 5 minutes possession to start the game Tech finally scored when Casey Timmerman scored on a great feed from Derrek Wiedeman. A few minutes would pass when Tech would notch another goal as Alex Del Pozzo scored on an assist from Timmerman. A minute later Tech would increase their lead to three when Timmerman scored as Joe Gibson found him on the doorstep to close the quarter. The defense played well in the first quarter shutting down the Mustangs and limiting them to bad angled shots.
In the second quarter Carl Wilson drove to the goal and scored making the score 4-0 in favor of Tech. The Mustangs would not go away though and they scored a minute later to make the game 4-1. The injury to Perrin then happened and inspired the play of the SMU squad. SMU would come out fast from the stoppage and quickly scored to close the gap to 4-2. The SMU defense would clamp down and their back up goalie came up big for the Mustangs as they shutout Tech the rest of the quarter and scored two more times to make the game 4-4 after two quarters of play.
In the third quarter Tech settled back down and took a one goal advantage when Derrek Wiedeman scored as a man up opportunity ended. The Mustangs however quickly answered and tied the game once again. After some scoreless play by both teams Tech was awarded a man up chance once again and they would convert when Wiedeman scored on an assist from Garrett Simmer, making his debut this season after an injury that sidelined the All Conference player until this point. With the one goal lead Tech's defense played well but could not hold the lead when SMU scored late in the quarter to send the game tied at six goals a piece into the final stanza.
The Yellow Jackets would respond though. Less than one minute into the quarter Eric Crawshaw would score the go ahead goal when he ripped a shot by the SMU goalie off an assist from Del Pozzo. Just one minute later the Del Pozzo to Crawshaw connection would occur again and Tech would lead 8-6. SMU would answer though minutes later and cut the lead to one for the Jackets. But Joe Gibson found a lane and drove to the cage scoring with nine minutes to go in the contest to push the lead back to two goals. The defense would respond for Tech keeping SMU at bay for the final nine minutes securing the win. Zach Gassman, Drew Camaratta, Matt Crabtree and Alan Weaver played well for the close defense. Sam Karpowicz had a rough first half but regained his control on the cage in the second half with some great saves. On midfield Andy Preston and Justin Porter had terrific games in keeping the SMU midfielders off balance.
The win pushed the Jackets to 4-5 on the season. Next Up: Saturday, March 29 at 3:00pm versus Auburn

Tech Tops the Tigers -
Mar 31, 2008On what started as a beautiful spring day in Atlanta, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets would have to battle both the Auburn Tigers and Mother Nature's wrath in route to a 9-7 win on Senior Day. The game lasted over 5 hours due to numerous weather stops in the game but in the end Tech earned a hard fought victory over Auburn for their first SELC win of the season and improve their record to 5-5.
The first quarter started quickly as Alex Del Pozzo scored on a transition goal on a great feed from Casey Timmerman. Auburn would strike fast as well scoring a minute later to tie the game at one goal a piece. After some back and forth play Tech would regain the lead when Del Pozzo scored his second of the game on an assist from Eric Crawshaw to lead by one. The Jackets would score again when Del Pozzo got the hat trick with his third goal of the contest on an assist from Timmerman on Tech's man up opportunity. Later in the quarter, the Jacket's Carl Wilson would score his lone goal of the game to push Tech's lead to three. Auburn would respond with two minutes to go in the quarter to close the gap to two goals. Then, with only one second on the clock, Auburn would score again to make the game 4-3 in favor of the Yellow Jackets and seemingly gain the momentum heading in the second quarter.
The Jackets would stop that momentum in the second quarter and the defense was playing well with goalie Sam Karpowicz making some great saves. Del Pozzo would score his game high fourth goal five minutes into the second pushing Tech back up by two at 5-3. But despite the solid defense by Tech, Auburn has the firepower and would score twice minutes later to tie the game at five goals a piece. Eric Crawshaw would score with one minute left in the quarter to give Tech a short lived one goal lead because Auburn would quickly respond and push the game to a 6-6 tie at halftime.
As the second half got ready to start the storms rolled in. After a 45 minute delay the teams re-took the field and played a scoreless third quarter. After the long delay both teams looked a little sloppy as they worked to re-gain their legs and footing on the wet turf. The defense played well and individually Matt Crabtree, Zack Gassman and Drew Camaratta worked hard to shut down their attackmen. The midfielders were also playing some great defense with players like David Hern, Justin Porter, Andy Preston and Wilson doing a great job versus the high powered offense of Auburn.
The fourth quarter start was also delayed as the lightening would not leave the area. The Jackets and Tigers took the field and Tech would come out inspired to win this one for seniors, their last home game. After a loose ball battle in the front of the goal the Auburn defense gave Tech a one goal as one of the defensemen deflected the ball into the cage giving tech a one goal lead early in the quarter. Minutes later Tech would score one themselves as Crawshaw finished on the crease on a feed from Timmerman to make the game 8-6 in favor of Tech. With 9:22 seconds remaining another storm rolled in halting play for another 30 minutes. As the teams were making plans for a re-scheduled resumption of play in the next week or two the officials gave the all clear signal to re-start play.
The Tigers came our roaring and scored to make the game 8-7 in favor of Tech. But the defense for Tech would rise to the occasion and make some great stops on the Auburn rushes. The game was iced when Derrek Wiedeman, playing in his final game at home, scored with three minutes to go to make the game 9-7. The defense thwarted all Auburn attempts and the attack did a great job in killing off the remaining time on the clock and Tech walked away with its third straight win and evened their season record to .500 at 5-5. The game would eventually end at 8:20pm- over five hours after it was scheduled to start.

Clemson Tops Tech in OT -
Mar 10, 2008After a good battle Friday night Tech traveled to Clemson to take on the Tigers. The Jackets would make the game exciting by forcing overtime but in then end, the Clemson Tigers prevailed to give Tech it's fifth loss in a row.
Tech arrived in Clemson, SC to see a field that had been swamped by rains the day before. Half of the field was underwater and the conditions less than perfect. The teams took the field and before you could blink Clemson was on the boad with two fast goals. Tech would re-group though and run off three straight goals. Derrek Wiedeman would score first for Tech on an assist from Matt Crabtree. Then Patrick Swelgin would tie the game at 2 when he scored on a feed from Wiedeman. to close out the first quarter Carl Wilson would score unassisted on a drive from behind the cage to give Tech a 3-2 advantage after one quarter of lacrosse.
Had Tech found itself after a hard fought game the night before? Well Clemson had hoped not and scored half way through the second quartet to tie the game once again. Tech would answer when Alex Del Pozzo scored on the doorstep from a feed from Crabtree. Tech's Brian Kobler would find the back of the net as well when he received a feed from Wiedeman to put the game at 5-3 in favor of Tech. But like the night before, the opposing team would score with seconds left in the half to cut the lead to one for Tech at 5-4.
The third quarter saw some back and forth play from both teams as the muddy conditions were causing havoc and numerous odd man rushes on each cage. The teams would trade goals with each scoring twice. Tech would mantain their lead when Alex Del Pozzo scored twice on two different man up opportunities on assists from Casey Timmerman.
As the final quarter Tech still had their one goal lead. But no for long. Clemson would turn it on in the fourth and score the three goals to take a two goal lead with 10 minutes left on the clock. Tech would respond to close the gap when Del Pozzo scored his fourth goal of the game on a feed from Wilson. Clemson would answer with just over four minutes to play to build the two goal lead once again. But Wiedeman would step up for tech. With just a minute and a half to play Wiedeman would score on a great isolation move to bring Tech within one goal. Some great defense by Tech would get the ball back to the offense with just seconds remaining. The team would call a time out to set up a play with only 3 seconds on the clock. Del Pozzo fed the crease and Wiedeman fought through two defensemen, snared the ball and scored as the horn sounded sending the game to overtime!
In the overtime session Tech gained the first possesion. After a time out the team came out and lost possession. It would prove too much as Clemson would capitalize and score just 2two minutes into ovetime to secure the comeback win.

LMU Lions Tame the Jackets -
Mar 10, 2008On a cool Friday night under a cloudy Atlanta skyline the Loyola Marymount Lions beat the Yellow Jackets 7-5 to send Tech to its fourth straight loss. LMU was coming off an upset of the Florida Gators earlier in the week and came out roaring versus the Jackets. LMU got the scoring going early when they scored three minutes in the contest. Tech like the previous 4 games responded when Derrek Wiedeman scored his only goal of the season to notch the game at one goal a piece. The rest of the first quarter remained silent from both teams as they exchanged possession after possession trying to break the tie. The Tech defense looked much improved from their previous few games and limited the Lion offense to off balanced shots and low angles opportunities. The close defense of Zack Gassman , Matt Crabtree , Drew Cammarata and Alan Weaver played well together stopping numerous attempts of the Lions to take the lead.
In the second quarter with the score tied at 1, LMU would flinch first when Tech's Carl Wilson drove through the defense to score and give Tech a lead. The defense continued its fine play and goalie Sam Karpowicz recorded 9 saves in the half to hold the LMU offense to only one goal in the half. The midfielder's were also playing well on defense and turning away the Lion potent offense. John Iannelli , Justin Porter , David Hern , Cam Miller and Joe Gibson were key players for Tech in allowing the Jackets to enjoy the half time lead.
In the third quarter Tech scored first when Camaratta cleared the ball and scored on a loose ball in front of the LMU crease to raise the lead to two goals at three to one in favor of Tech. LMU would not fade though as they responded with a goal of their own a few minutes later when one of the midfielders fought a rare opening on the Tech defense this evening bringing the game back to a one goal defecit for LMU. Tech would add to their lead once again when Eric Crawshaw scored on a cross crease pass from Wilson. But with less than a minute to go in the quarter the otherwise tight Tech defense fell apart and allowed to goals to LMU to head into the fourth quarter all tied at 4 goals a piece. It would prove too costly for the Jackets to recover from.
To start the fourth quarter LMU ran off two more quick goals to lead 6-4 until responded with 4 minutes to play when Patrick Swelgin scored to bring Tech back within one goal. The Jackets would work hard in getting off some good looks at the cage but were unable to score to force overtime. LMU would score again late in the game to seal the fate of the Jackets and escape Atlanta with a 7-5 win over Tech.
Head Coach Ken Lovic added. "we came out with much more emotion that the previous few games and our guys played great on defense. I was proud of the efforts all night. Our offense ran well but could not get the goals we needed at crucuial times. Overall I am pleased about our effort being up but we still need to learn to put a full 60 minutes together on both sides of the field."
